The Bleeding Heart Tavern
The Bleeding Heart Tavern, a part of the Bleeding Heart restaurant and bistro, was established in December 1998. However, the tavern's history dates back to 1746, when it was reputedly a place where patrons could become intoxicated for a penny, and extremely inebriated for two pennies. The name "Bleeding Heart" originates from a 16th-century inn located nearby, which displayed a sign featuring the heart of the Virgin Mary pierced by five swords. However, this image was eventually replaced by the legend of Lady Elizabeth Hatton, who was brutally murdered in 1626. After undergoing a significant renovation, the venue has recently reopened as a wine bar and restaurant.
