St Lawrence
John Fane, the 7th Earl of Westmorland, found that the old church in Mereworth obstructed the view from his magnificent new Palladian home. As a result, he decided to demolish it. This was not the first time he had taken such a drastic step, as he had previously demolished the old castle and the village. In place of the old structures, he constructed a new classical church and a new village in a nearby location. This move not only enhanced the view from his home, but also gave the area a fresh, modern look.
