Slug & Lettuce
The Establishment, which opened its doors in May 2012, is a unique venue that was once a courthouse, notable for being the site of Britain's last public hanging. The conversion of the building was carried out with great respect for its historical features, many of which have been preserved. Visitors can still see the judge's seat, the Crown crest, the dock, the spectators' gallery, and even the stairs leading to an underground passage to the exercise yard. In a creative twist, some of the former prison cells have been repurposed into dining areas. The Establishment has recently been rebranded as Slug & Lettuce, and it's worth noting that real ale is no longer served. Despite these changes, the venue remains a fascinating blend of history and modern dining.
