The New Pot Oil
Wrenthorpe, also known as Pot Ovens, is an area that was marked on an 1822 map, approximately four decades after the departure of the last potters from the region. The local pub, originally constructed in the 1860s, was named the Malt Shovel. It was later rebuilt in 1899 and underwent several name changes. From the 1970s to 1988, it was known as the Pot 'Oil, and then as The Potovens until 1991. The area's rich history in the pottery industry is commemorated by a Blue Plaque.
