The George Tavern
The George, a vibrant and lively pub located in the heart of the town, is a popular spot among the local students, primarily for its food offerings. The pub, however, does not serve real ale. The interior is adorned with numerous photographs showcasing the history of Oldham, providing a nostalgic atmosphere. The pub also features a pool table in the lower drinking area, adding to its appeal as a social gathering spot. It's worth noting that The George has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Before adopting its current name, it was known as the Brewery Tavern. Even earlier, it was called the Miners Arms, a nod to its proximity to Jackson's Pit, a former coal mine. After a period of closure, The George reopened its doors to the public on July 4, 2020. Despite the changes it has undergone, the pub remains a beloved fixture in the community, continuing to draw in patrons with its unique blend of history, ambiance, and cuisine.
