The Jolly Farmer
The Jolly Farmer, a bustling village pub, was a favored gathering spot for Battle of Britain air crews during World War II in 1940. Fast forward to 2021, the pub has now become a part of the Dirty Pig eat-at-home business, headquartered in Margate. The name 'Jolly Farmer' is actually a misinterpretation of 'Golden Farmer', a nickname given to a prosperous man from Bagshot named William Davis (1627-1690). Contrary to what the name suggests, Davis did not amass his wealth through farming, but allegedly as a footpad. His infamous reputation led to numerous 18th-century pubs commemorating him through their names or signs.
